Elephants are uniquely fascinating creatures. I’ve always liked them, but my interest grew when I learned that they mourn their dead, and can recognize the vocalizations of other elephants they knew that had passed. I drew this around the same time the baby giraffe was born at Cincinnati Zoo. Five months later I learned that she was euthanized due to a severe leg injury, July 1, 2011. I’m so sad about it. Crushing blow.
